A Texas man got the shock of his life after discovering he was married—without ever saying “I do.” Now, his ex-girlfriend is behind bars for the bizarre scheme.
A 42-year-old man from Beverly Hills, Texas contacted police last Friday after finding an unexpected package at his home. Inside the Bath & Body Works gift bag, sent by his ex-girlfriend Kristin Marie Spearman, 36, was a copy of a marriage certificate claiming the two were legally wed. Also included was a photo of Spearman holding the marriage license.
According to police, the man and Spearman were previously in a relationship and had obtained a marriage license around June 2 in anticipation of an upcoming wedding. However, the two broke up before the ceremony ever took place.

That didn’t stop Spearman. Authorities say she convinced a pastor or reverend to certify the marriage license even though the man was not present—a required condition for the marriage to be valid. She then allegedly filed the certificate with the county clerk’s office, making it appear official.
“This is a bizarre and concerning situation,” said Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin, who confirmed the department is still investigating who officiated the unauthorized marriage.
Spearman was located at her home near Hewitt, Texas with the assistance of the Hewitt Police Department. She was arrested and booked into the McLennan County Jail on third-degree felony stalking charges.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, including how the marriage was officiated without the required legal steps being followed.
