A Chinese couple’s attempt at a viral challenge went horribly wrong when a man found himself unable to release his girlfriend’s hand from his mouth—leading to an unexpected hospital visit.
The Challenge That Backfired
The bizarre incident took place in Jilin Province, China, when the couple decided to try a social media trend where one person attempts to fit their partner’s fist into their mouth. At first, everything seemed fine—until the man’s jaw muscles unexpectedly locked up, trapping the woman’s hand inside.

As panic set in, the man’s face turned red, he began drooling uncontrollably, and his throat started making gurgling sounds. Worse still, his teeth clamped down on his girlfriend’s wrist, making any attempt to remove her hand painful.
A Desperate Dash to the Hospital
Realizing they couldn’t solve the problem on their own, the couple rushed to a local hospital, where baffled doctors quickly assessed the unusual situation.
Dr. Zhang Mingyuan, who handled the case, explained that the man’s jaw muscles had contracted involuntarily, creating a cycle where pain triggered further clenching. The more they tried to free the hand, the worse it got.
Medical staff took a careful approach to avoid causing nerve damage or dislocating the man’s jaw. First, they played soothing music to help him relax. Then, a special mouth opener was used to widen his jaw just enough for an injection of muscle relaxants.
After 20 minutes, Dr. Zhang gently rotated the woman’s wrist, using the natural movement of the jaw joint to finally free her hand.
A Painful Lesson Learned
Thankfully, both the man and his girlfriend avoided serious injuries, but the doctor warned against attempting similar stunts. He emphasized that forcing a person’s jaw open could lead to permanent nerve damage or even jaw dislocation.
While social media challenges can be fun, this couple’s painful lesson proves that not every trend is worth trying—especially when it involves shoving your hand down someone’s throat.
