Kelly White, a 28-year-old content creator from Long Island, New York, has embraced an unconventional journey to motherhood by “adopting” eight incredibly lifelike dolls. Despite the mixed reactions from people, Kelly considers her dolls her children, caring for them as if they were real.
Her fascination with realistic dolls began in October 2023 after stumbling upon a YouTube video featuring a reborn doll collection. Initially intended as a prop, her first doll, Jennifer, soon became much more.
“I’ve wanted to be a mom since I was eight,” Kelly shared. “When I got Jennifer, I felt a strong attachment as if she were an adopted child. From there, my collection grew.”
To date, Kelly has spent over $2,000 on her collection, which now includes Jennifer, Summer, twins Molly and Antony, Ashley, Elizabeth, Michael, and baby Adam. She even plans to welcome a new addition, Emily, this month.
Living Like a Mom
Kelly has fully immersed herself in her role as an “adoptive mom.” Her daily routine involves preparing meals for her dolls, dressing them, and even taking them out on outings. She even used to breastfeed the younger dolls, although she now bottle-feeds them with “milk” made from a mix of flour and water.
Jennifer, her first doll, stands at an impressive 39 inches and has her own bed in Kelly’s room. Most of the dolls are kept in cribs in her living room, but baby Adam and Jennifer share a spot in her bedroom.
“They’re comforting,” Kelly said. “I’m living the life I’ve always wanted—as if I were a mom.”
When they’re not at home enjoying a Disney movie marathon or getting ready for bed to the sound of Kelly’s ocarina, the dolls accompany her to parks, restaurants, and other outings in a double stroller.
Mixed Reactions
While Kelly finds joy and comfort in caring for her dolls, her hobby has drawn criticism both online and in person.
“Some people say it’s weird or creepy,” Kelly admitted. “At first, I wanted to keep Jennifer a secret. But now, I embrace it. Not everyone will understand.”
For Kelly, these dolls are more than collectibles; they represent her aspirations of motherhood. She hopes to one day adopt real children and sees her dolls as a way to practice and prepare for that future.
“I’ve spent a lot on them, but it’s worth it. Taking care of them is comforting and gives me purpose,” she said.
